Residential rooftop solar PV permit or electrical/building permit path
City of San Diego DSD says a Residential Rooftop-Mounted Solar PV Permit is required to install a residential rooftop-mounted solar PV system or solar photovoltaic shingles on residential property. For single-family, duplex, or townhouse roof installations designed under the DSD template, the permit can be self-issued without plan review when listed criteria are met, including the 38.4 kW AC maximum output limit and no structural, fire, or combination building permit trigger. Other solar scopes, including ground-mounted systems, structural modifications, new support structures, or non-qualifying buildings, should be routed through the DSD electrical or building permit path.
