No-Plan Building Permit or building permit check for window and door replacement
City of San Diego DSD's What Permits Do I Need guide lists in-kind door and window replacement as a typical residential project that qualifies for a No-Plan Building Construction Permit. DSD's Building Permit page also says a building permit is required to improve existing buildings and that projects on designated historic sites, in historic districts, or involving structures 45 years or older may require historic review. Window and exterior door work should therefore confirm City jurisdiction, in-kind scope, structural opening changes, energy/safety requirements, and historic status before selecting the no-plan or plan-required building permit path.
